Colloid and Interface Science is a field of science which has been spearheaded by developments in the Industry and Technology and less by University courses dedicated for the subject. Over the recent decades, the field has grown dramatically in both theory and applications. Today, it is a discipline that embodies concepts that are fundamental to understanding both microscopic and macroscopic behaviour of a wide range of industrial systems: Food, Pharmaceutical, Paints, Detergents, Cosmetics, Ceramics, Textiles etc. More recent applications include micro- and nano- technologies used in electronic and biomedical applications. And most significantly, the concepts of interfacial science are essential in the design of a wide variety of pollution control technologies, a basic requirement of industrial operation today. A need was therefore felt that a special refresher course be conducted to formally provide the training in the science and technology of interfacial processes.

In view of this importance as well as the rapidly evolving interdisciplinary nature of the subject, the Western India Chapter of the Indian Society for Surface Science and Technology decided to offer a special Refresher Course that addresses both conceptual and applied aspects of interfacial science and engineering and would benefit both beginners as well as specialist industrial practioners. In the year 2000, the society offered the course for the first time and received extremely encouraging response from the industry as well as academia. This year once again, the society will be conducting such a course. The course will be conducted by experts in the field, and will fuse basics with various recent advances in the area.

The course will be offered as an intensive short course on Colloid and Interface Science and will be conducted over six working days beginning Jan 20, 2003.
 
 

The course fees is Rs. 6,500 for those who register in advance. The last date for advance registration is Dec. 31, 2002. Since this would be a unique opportunity for students of chemistry, chemical technology etc. to learn the subject, a limited number of students will be registered for the course and they will be charged a concessional fees of Rs. 1,500.
